Mentalism and Mentalists: A State of Being

To start with, I should inform my reader that I am a mentalist and work with the philosophy of Mentalism concerning myself and others that I come across. But, I am not a mentalist in the sense that you probably understand it up to this moment you are reading this.

In the Western world where the word was coined, mentalism is used in a sense other than the meaning I and many others attach to it. A look up any dictionary would define mentalism to mean the art or activities connected with creating illusions, or magic, for a viewing, pleasure-seeking audience. That is on one hand. On the other hand, mentalism is defined as the fascinating demonstrations resulting from a mind that has developed itself to some degrees to function in certain faculties that can only be termed as “mental faculties”, not the sleight of hands or the creation of optical illusion which the magician is known for.

The mentalist who has developed his mind through the understanding of human nature and psychology and through unfolding such faculties as intuition, clairvoyance, clairaudience, mind-reading, and hypnosis often makes a show with these abilities, providing a psychological experience to audiences. These shows, though different from those of the illusionist, seek to take onlookers into the inner world of the mind. More people have been mesmerized by the performances of these entertainment mentalists than they have by magicians.

While mentalists and magicians, or mentalism and magic, are not the same, the concept of mentalism is much more than creating psychological thrill for people who have the money to pay for it. Mentalism is a life concept, it is a way of life, it is a fact of existence. Everyone can be said to be a mentalist. Why? Because we live our lives and perceive the world through the lenses of mentalism. In the inner realm of our thought lives, we build beliefs, superstitions, ideas, and concepts that influence our daily lives. We are always in the laboratory of our minds creating our individual experiences using the major mental ingredient of thought. Beyond all physical appearances, we all live in  the country of the mind, all of us mentalists.

The Universe is mental. Life and existence is mental. Unfortunately, only a few have been able to pierce the fabric of physical reality to see that behind our material world is the influencing world of thought.

When I started hearing that thoughts create reality and that the Universe is mental, it was not an easy concept to digest. But through gradual illumination that I found on the path of spirituality, I began to notice the effects of my thoughts upon my life and also began to notice the constructed thoughts which others created for me, through their own thoughts or through energetic words, in order to experience as a reality. I discerned that many of my perceptions were all occurring within a mental frame inside of which the things I perceived outside were constructed or, to use a more direct term, programmed.

Many of what we call spiritual experiences are purely mental creations that may lead to the conclusion that spiritual reality is only a subtler form of mental reality. Times of prayer and meditation all occur in the mind, varying in degrees in which the individual praying or meditating dive deeper into the subconscious to commune not only with the deeper recesses of his being but to attune with the Universal Mind within which all life is connected. On the material plane, the physical body is the lid of the being of man. Beyond this lid exists a world teeming with thoughts and energy that not only influence the objective reality of the man but also gives him the means to influence all things around and within himself.

The Universe is mental. Life is mental. Man is a mental being, his body the lid, the door into the world within.

Few people know this. The majority are blinded by the constructed matrix of physical reality around them. Even things like occasional intuitive feelings, hunches, dreams, feelings, and imagination do not seem sufficient to inform them that beyond the curtain of the physical world is something that extends beyond matter, time, and space, and that runs through them as humans. Those who know, as well as those who are beginning to understand, are creating connections with the reality of the subjective world of thought and the objective world of material existence. Through this understanding, the laws and principles regulating the influence of the world of thought upon the world of matter becomes known.

The greatest education lacking in the world today is the knowledge of self. With this education comes the enlightenment regarding the basic constitution of humanity and the mental powers at its disposal. The result being that each individual can command the faculties of mind as he or she goes about experiencing life on Earth and through the mental labyrinth within him or her. Some of these mental faculties to be developed are the same that entertainment mentalists develop and use to earn a living. However, from an holistic point of view, a humanity with developed mental faculties is a humanity functioning at its power; a humanity that lives beyond material existence and consciously interacts with realities across the mental and spiritual planes of existence. This would be a humanity that can visualise and cause things into existence, enhancing the collective journey and experience of the whole. It would also be a humanity that can project thoughts across distances and by consciousness traverses space into distant realms within the universe.  This humanity would not be limited by time and space and would have a conscious connection to the Mind of God from which it originates and to which it is ever connected.

How can humanity be all that? The answer is mentalism – as a curriculum of learning to educate, inform, enlighten, and inspire every man, woman, boy, and girl to move up the next step of evolution, developing as many mental and psychic faculties and abilities as is possible for each.

Until humans become fascinated with the science of the mind and the application of its laws and principles to aid the development of their personal lives, the advancement of the collective, and to cause manifestations of certain positive circumstances and experiences, they will remain spectators to those tricksters who employ illusions, and those entertainment mentalists who take advantage of the ignorant and thrill-seeking nature of the uninitiated.

This is a very enlightening piece that I hope it will make the world come to see mentalism or the true mentalists in the right light, and as just more than mere skilled tricksters.

Victor Negro, with this piece, has encouraged and enlightened us as to who a true mentalist should be, and what real mentalism should be.

Mentalism, as abundantly espounded in this piece, is what the world needs to take it to the next stage in its evolution.

Thank you for your thoughts, Kunle. I really appreciate it.

Seems to me that you use the term mentalist when I would use the term consciousness and specifically higher consciousness. I’ll try to broaden my understanding and use mentalist or mentalism when appropriate.
